Wake of the flood

Pequea flood 1. Pequea, Pennsylvania. 2005.
A week of rain will do that, I guess. Any piece of camping apparatus or playground equipment that could trap a tree or three did just that as the creek flowing through Pequea, Pennsylvania's recreation area churned through- and over- one October morning. When there's grass stuck in the volleyball net, you know you've had a flood.

Paris-Tours: A fall classic

Paris-Tours peloton. Voves, France. 2003.
Adding to the nostalgia associated with not being in France, today was the running of the famed one-day cycling race, Paris-Tours. Last year's Paris-Tours was the last race I covered for Cyclingnews.com, and my farewell to many friends I made on the cycling circuit: photographers, motorcycle drivers, riders, members of the race organization, etc. Paris-Tours is one of the final major races of the European road racing season. Typically grey and cool at the start, there's usually a palpable sense that everyone's a bit tired from the long year of racing and looking forward to the winter months and a little time off.
This photo, from the 2003 race, shows the tail end of the peloton hanging on for dear life as the race sped south to the Loire Valley. The town of Voves, about 40km into the race, was the one spot I could get to in the car after the race started to get a picture of the early action, send that to my colleague in Belgium doing the live race reporting, then jump back in the car and speed to Tours to set up for the finish. I can also relate well to being at the back of a race, hanging on...

Rear window

Rear window. Paris. 2003.
In a matter of days it will be one year since I left Paris. It's hard not to miss the joint and various pleasures both abstract and concrete.
Voici the unglamorous yet occasionally captivating view from my last apartment's kitchen window. Speaking of the old abode, the current occupant of the apartment offers his own insights into life in la France. After all, what's a blog without gratuitous hyperlinks? Allez!
A new Verizon

Verizon. New York. 2005.
Most people consider Verizon's various towers in New York to be bunker-like eyesores. In general, they are. The downtown building always struck me as an unfortunate distraction when making photos of the Brooklyn Bridge. Finally, last weekend, I found the right angle to make the Verizon monolith an interesting subject in its own right.

Have a seat

Chairs. New York. 1998.
It's true, when it comes to recurring subjects in my photography I'm mildly obsessed with chairs and seating. I think collections of chairs can make for interesting patterns, arrangements, etc. The sum of the parts is often much more interesting. This image is from New York's Bryant Park.

Ready for takeoff

Ready for Takeoff. Baltimore. 2002.
Ready? Steady? Go.
I fancy myself the trend caboose. Bringing up the rear. Always the last to try something on. Welcome to my (untitled) photo blog.
Truth be told, I set up a blog page about a year ago. But sufficiently inspired (or sufficiently bored) to begin anew, I couldn't remember the name of my previous effort. Searching didn't work because the search function didn't seem to extend prior to 2005. So... I begin anew.
The plan, entering into things, is to focus on photography. Notoriously lazy when it comes to updating my half-assed, weekend effort websites, I've decided choosing one or two images on a given day and saying a little something about them might prove more fulfilling than trying to jam 20 different photos onto a barebones website.
Oh yes... I'm gonna get my blog on.
